Morning Chalk Up dug into a growing group of fitness events drawing big-name talent without official CrossFit Sanctional status. Specifically, The Torian Pro in Brisbane, Australia.
Torian is paying for airfare to transport Rich Froning, Tia-Clair Toomey, Chyna Cho, and Tasia Percevecz to Brisbane for their event. The event runs November 8th – 10th, and overlaps with week four of the 2020 CrossFit Open.
The Torian Pro’s team views their attraction of big-name talent and big-name sponsors like Reebok, The WOD Life, and Again Faster as steps toward eventual Sanctional status.
Torian has also issued “Pro Card’ invites to a number of athletes like Kara Saunders, Khan Porter, Maddie Sturt, Courtney Haley, Jess Coughlan, Luke Fiso, Lindsay Vaughan, Matt Mcleod, Katelyn Van Zyl, and Rob Forte.
Another similar event in a possible pre-Sanctional state is The Iron Games in Cedar City, Utah. It runs this coming weekend. Big-name sponsors are Southern Utah University, Brute Strength, and FNX. Notably, the Buttery Bros will be competing on a team with Talking Elite Fitness’s Tommy Marquez.
According to Morning Chalk Up, they were able to confirm there will be no additional changes to the 2020 CrossFit Sanctionals list, but that the list will grow in 2021. They spoke to CrossFit’s Noor Greene from the Sanctioned and Licensed Events team, who did note there will not be nearly as many new events that year.
Also in competitive news, CrossFit athletes tore it up this week at the International Functional Fitness Federation’s annual global competition. Zach Sowder of the United States took first, followed by Australian Khan Porter in second, and Latvian Uldis Upenieks in third.
We reported last week that ESPN’s final print edition of their magazine features two-time CrossFit Games champion Katrin Davidsdottir naked. ESPN published a digital copy of that article today, which includes artful pictures of Davidsdottir completing a jerk, sitting on a cliff, doing some handstand walks, and more. We have the link in our show notes. Please be adults about this.
And that’s it for news about CrossFit on Wednesday, September 4th.
