Scott Panchik to Join Mayhem Freedom, BarBend’s History of Functional Fitness

During an interview on the floor of the CrossFit Games, just after the final team event, Rich Froning dropped a bombshell: teammate Dre Strohm’s first year on the team would also be his last. Froning and fellow athletes Tasia Percevecz and Chyna Cho have since mentioned multiple times they were still trying to convince Strohm to stay, but to no avail.

Morning Chalk Up is reporting they have sources who say eight-time CrossFit Games individual athlete Scott Panchik will be taking up the second male spot on CrossFit Mayhem Freedom.

There are some logistics to figure out, though. Panchik owns CrossFit Mentality in Mentor, Ohio. He would have to join Chyna Cho in commuting to CrossFit Mayhem in Cookeville, Tennessee. My guess here at WODDITY was that 2015 CrossFit Games champion and 2019 CrossFit Games wildcard Ben Smith would be the fourth member of Mayhem Freedom. Smith was appointed Mayhem’s male alternate in 2019.

BarBend, a digital publication and media partner of USA Weightlifting, published a deep dive into the history of functional fitness. And I mean deep. Like Hippocrates and the possible invention of the medicine ball. They go so far as to cite their sources, so it’s a fascinating and accurate read, telling the story of functional fitness until modern-day CrossFit, TRX, OrangeTheory, and F45-like training methodologies. I’ve put the link in my show notes, if you have a few extra minutes today.

If you like number fun, today is 190909. If you like life fun, CrossFit’s mainsite workout today is a rest day.

And that’s it for news about CrossFit on Monday, September 9th.
