Sanctional Athlete’s Positive Drug Test, Kristin Holte to Ireland

I’m on the road this morning, filming more episodes for my Road Warrior Fitness YouTube series. I’m not saying that for any reason other than to let you picture me recording this from inside a truck, with Beaumont panting in my ear.

Mauro Acevedo is a CrossFit Athlete and former CrossFit Games team competitor who has tested positive for PEDs. He wrote on Instagram two years ago that he had been using steroids when he competed in 2017, but claimed to have stopped since. Acevedo had earned an invite to the CrossFit Mayan Classic this year, but has now tested positive for the use of Endurobol.

Also known as GW501516, Endurobol’s intended use was to treat metabolic and cardiovascular disease, but was abandoned by medical professionals when it was found to cause rapid cancer development in mice. It’s one of the two drugs Ricky Garard tested positive for when he reached the 2017 CrossFit Games podium. Garard was stripped of his third-place finish, given a four-year suspension, and forfeited his prize money.

Ben Garard, Ricky’s brother, notably tested positive for performance enhancing drugs during the 2019 season. Morning Chalk Up was the first to break this news. We have a link to their article in our show notes at WODDITY.com.

When Mauro Acevedo posted about his use in 2017, he wrote:

“The first years of my career I tried to supplement myself without knowing so much about the subject, just listening and reading things without any advice. As time went by I realized that the use of steroids was not necessary, that it was only a matter of time and training to improve my weaknesses and strengths.”

In Sanctional news, the CrossFit Filthy 150 has posted on Instagram that Kristin Holte joins Dan Bailey as a confirmed wildcard athlete for their event in November. Filthy 150 is the first Sanctional of the 2020 CrossFit Games season, starting a week after the CrossFit Open.

And that’s it for news about CrossFit on Monday, September 16th. Thanks for listening. Be sure to rate, review, subscribe, like, recommend, share, love, discuss, and listen another ten times. I’m Ben Garves.
