Good morning and welcome to the WODDITY podcast for news about CrossFit. We are a daily podcast, Monday through Friday, doing CrossFit news in five minutes or less.
My name is Ben Garves and today is Dave Castro Day III, also known as Thursday, the 24th of October, 2019.
Fittest in Dubai Documentary
Earlier this week I mentioned the Dubai CrossFit Championship’s Fittest in Dubai documentary is available for pre-sale on Vimeo for $12.99, or $4.99 to rent. Well, yesterday I chatted with Diego Centeno over email, and he confirmed it’s also available on iTunes. I haven’t watched it yet, but believe me when I say I’ll be one of the first to pick it up when it releases on November 5th. Pre-order now. I have a link to their trailer in my show notes at WODDITY.com: the trailer on this thing makes you want to go do Murph, then Fight Gone Bad, then Fran. It’s pretty energizing.
Hey Diego: thank you for listening, and thanks for reaching out.
NOBULL Fitness Film Festival
Tickets for the Fitness Film Festival from NOBULL have officially gone on sale. They added a note that seats are limited, so be sure to buy early if you want to go to the event in Brooklyn on November 23rd. In attendance will be a number of NOBULL athletes, like Brooke Wells, Katrin Davidsdottir, and Tia-Clair Toomey. I mentioned it yesterday on the podcast, but the Buttery Bros will be there as well, debuting something special. Film entries are being accepted through October 31st, and tickets are available at fitnessfilmfestival.com – I’m not sponsored by this event, I’m just excited about it.
Open 20.1 Penalties Hit Hard
CrossFit announced in a press release yesterday that a number of athletes have received penalties for their performances on 20.1. Notable among them are Sam Briggs and Frederik Aegidius, who received penalties for not abiding by the two-foot takeoff rule for the burpees over the bar. Other penalties included lack of full extension on the ground-to-overhead, and false starts. Those affected some prominent athletes also, including Dani Speegle, Meg Reardon, Alexis Johnson, Brooke Haas, and Willy Georges. The biggest scoring impact has been on Aegidius’s score, dropping him more than 400 places from his original third-place spot. Samantha Briggs dropped more than 100 places.
Watch: 20.3 Workout Predictions
Morning Chalk Up is back this week, predicting 20.3 will be a repeat of a previous CrossFit Open workout. They’ve done this each week, but have a special reason why this time, they may be right. In ten years of the CrossFit Open, every week from .1 to .5 has had one of its workouts repeated. Week three is the only one that has never had a repeated workout. The three .3 workouts which are most likely, based on repeated movements, are 19.3, 14.3, and 11.3. The most unlikely is 14.3, a topic I visit in my Open analysis for the Norwegian CrossFit Championship workout announcement live stream this evening.
You can check that out starting at 4:30 PM Pacific (7:30 Eastern) on WODDITY’s YouTube channel. There’s a link to the stream in my show notes at WODDITY.com. Click the alert button on the live stream to get notified when the stream kicks off.
Here are a couple of smaller tidbits to close us out today:
Mid-Atlantic CrossFit Challenge
The Mid-Atlantic CrossFit Challenge has announced registration for their online qualifier will start on November 1st.
Lukas Hogberg Withdraws
2018’s third-fittest man on earth Lukas Hogberg has decided he’s not going to continue with the CrossFit Open, citing stress and a long 2019 season. He’s going back to the drawing board for a healthier training plan and will likely be seen working to qualify through Sanctional events for 2020.
20.3 Workout Hint
Dave Castro has posted his weekly workout hint for 20.3, which is the rusted out mess of a car from the 60s, with ripped seats and smashed windows. Instead of even trying to analyze this, I’ll do some word association and see what I come up with. Car, car wreck, train wreck, wreckless, road rage, rage, fist fight, fight club, fight night, fight gone bad…ohhhhhh. 20.3 will be Fight Gone Bad.
And that’s it for news about CrossFit on Thursday, October 24th. Thanks for listening. Be sure to rate, review, and subscribe. It’s the best way to give back to the show, because it helps more people find us. I’m Ben Garves.
