Mat Fraser: Four-Time CrossFit Games Champion

Since his first competitive CrossFit appearance and a fifth-place finish 2013 North East Regional, Mat Fraser has waged a near-perfectly dominant performance.

From his status as the 2014 Rookie of the Year, to the heir-apparent as the king of CrossFit, Fraser is one ‘Fittest on Earth’ win away from tying Rich Froning with four-straight titles.

Young and healthy, Mat years of competitive fitness ahead of him. Aerobic Capacity founder and coach Chris Hinshaw notes Fraser is the most focused athlete in the sport. His focus over the years on mindset, in addition to his training, indicates his legendary career is far from over.

2019 CrossFit Games Season

Mat Fraser became the second-ever man to win four-consecutive CrossFit Games “Fittest on Earth” titles in 2019 when he passed Noah Ohlsen on the final day of competition to become the overall points leader.

Mat is the son of two Canadian Olympic athletes. Both his father (Don Fraser) and his mother (Candace Jones) competed as figure skaters, winning gold medals in the Canadian Figure Skating Championships in 1975 and 1976. Skating together, they placed 14th in the 1976 Winter Olympic Games.

Fraser had his own Olympic career – competing in Junior National Weightlifting.

Early Years

Long before his CrossFit career, Fraser played youth football and kept himself outdoors. in 2009, at the age of thirteen, he won a Junior National Weightlifting Champion title. He became a resident athlete at the Olympic Education Center in 2010 and 2011.

Notably, Mat broke his back in two places. He recovered to continue hitting personal records after surgery. Fraser started participating in the sport of fitness in 2012, when he started attending Champlain Valley CrosssFit.

Professional Career Outside of Sports

Fraser is a full-time athlete, but graduated from the University of Vermont with two degrees, in Mechanical Engineering and Business. Prior to his success in the CrossFit Games, he spent time in an engineering internship at an aerospace company.

Sorry, ladies! Fraser is engaged to marry his long-term sweetheart Sammy Moniz. Sammy is well-known for her work as the manager/agent for sixteen of the top CrossFit athletes and runs the Feeding the Frasers Instagram account. She has years of experience working with Reebok on their relationship with CrossFit.

CrossFit Career

In 2013, Fraser competed in his first CrossFit Open, placing 192nd and qualifying for the North East regional event.

After placing fifth in that regional, Fraser has been on a rampage. He’s won every applicable regional from 2014 to the demise of the regional events after 2018.

Fraser has place first in three CrossFit Opens and seventh twice. His second-place finish at the 2014 CrossFit Games earned him the Rookie of the Year award, along with the pressure of replacing the four-time champion Rich Froning, who would retire from individual competitions that year.

Fraser was edged out from the title of Fittest Man on Earth again in 2015 by long-time veteran Ben Smith. Since then, Fraser has won three back-to-back CrossFit Games titles.
