Annie Thorisdottir: Two-Time CrossFit Games Champion

Anníe Mist Þórisdóttir (Annie Thorisdottir) has been one of the most dominant athletes in the sport of CrossFit® over the last ten years. She’s been one of very few athletes to survive (and thrive) in many eras of the young, evolving sport. Annie strikes fear in the hearts of her opponents with her well-rounded skillset. While competitive in nature, she’s known to be a compassionate human with a big smile.

Growing Up Thorisdottir

Annie Thorisdottir spent her earliest years in Vík í Mýrdal, a small town on the southern tip of Iceland. She’s the youngest of three, with two older brothers.

Thorisdottir practiced many sports when she was younger. Her early career took her to the national gymnastics team before she decided to quit at the age of fifteen. “I knew that I would never be the best in the world,” she told Vogue in 2014.

Her next passion was ballet, and she found success at the Icelandic Ballet School before later focusing on track and field. Annie’s performances at the pole vault gained her national champion status two years in a row. Finding the sport repetitive, she started looking for something else. CrossFit offered the excitement she wanted, and Annie started the sport in 2009.

Only weeks into the sport, Thorisdottir flew to California and competed in the CrossFit Games. Her ambitions took her to the University of Reykjavik, where she was studying to be a doctor. Her tenure lasted from 2009 to 2011, when the demands of her success in the sport took her away from her studies.

Thorisdottir’s first Games in 2009 ranked her eleventh in the world. After a second-place finish in 2010, Annie won the CrossFit Games in 2011 and 2012. Injuries

Annie Thorisdottir’s first significant injury happened in 2013. That year, a bulging disc in her back forced her to take a step back from competition. The pain of the injury was so intense, it took more than an hour for paramedics to get her into an ambulance.

During the 2015 CrossFit Games, Thorisdottir suffered heat stroke during Murph. Named after fallen Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, Murph is one of the hardest workouts in the sport. After returning to the competition floor for one more workout, she decided to protect her body and withdraw.

Profession

Thorisdottir remains a dominant athlete in the sport of CrossFit. She retains a number of sponsors and actively competes. She co-owns CrossFit Reykjavik with Hrönn Svansdóttir and Evert Víglundsson.
